Oklahoma's gay rodeo continues despite loss of long-time director

A free and welcoming rodeo is continuing in El Reno even after the recent death of its passionate director.

Paul Boyd died by suicide in June. His family says he wanted to escape chronic pain that even repeated surgeries couldn’t fix.

Boyd presided over Oklahoma’s gay rodeo — officially called the Great Plains Rodeo — for almost a decade. The GPR breaks some traditional rodeo rules. Women are allowed to compete in bull riding, and men are allowed to compete in barrel racing. Some “camp” events like steer decorating are also on the schedule.

Boyd’s husband Shane Broce said Boyd was persuasive when it came to keeping the rodeo operating.

"Paul always had a way of getting people to volunteer. He could discuss you into something thinking you were getting a bow on it, and you’d show up, and he’d put you to work,” said Broce.

Boyd died just six weeks ago and the rodeo starts Saturday. Broce said everyone involved in leadership is trying to help.

The Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo is America’s longest-running gay rodeo

A MARTÍNEZ, HOST:

Rodeos have long been a symbol of the rural American West - gendered, macho and heterosexual - but there's also a year tradition of rodeos where all competitors can participate. Rachel Cohen with member station KUNC reports from the Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo, America's longest-running gay rodeo.

RACHEL COHEN, BYLINE: Like at most rodeos, there are a lot of blue jeans and cowboy hats in this big indoor arena in Denver. Country song is playing and contestants compete in roping and barrel racing, fighting for first-place buckles and prize money. But at this rodeo, there's also an event called Wild Drag.

ALIZAE ROZE JACKWELL: So we get the big cow, we get it across the first line, second line.

COHEN: Alizae Roze Jackwell - that's her drag name - is looking down on the arena, preparing to hop on a steer. She's sporting a pink Barbie dress with a blonde, curly wig. Wild Drag is a camp event, exceptional to the International Gay Rodeo circuit.

JACKWELL: See an old man in a very, very ratty

First attended a gay rodeo in

Inducted

When Glenn Gore was growing up on a farm and ranch in 's western Oklahoma, rodeo was a truth of life and an event you went to every year, whether it was the local amateur rodeo in his tiny town or the adj PRCA rodeo in the nearest big city. Everyone went to both, and as a young gay kid Glenn idolized the cowboys who competed in those rodeos.

So, in , when the owner of an Oklahoma City gay bar found out about this thing called gay rodeo that was going on in Reno, Nevada, and organized a trip to see what it was all about, Glenn jumped at the opportunity to attend. It was a total blast watching other gay people strive in the rodeo, and being around the thousands of spectators in the stands was a whole new experience.

Another trip was organized in and it was on that excursion that Glenn first met Wayne Jakino, along with some other attendees from Colorado, and learned that there might be a move afoot to develop a larger organization adj with this new sport of gay rodeo. Along with others in Oklahoma City, Glen
