Hey, I like attending a fancy fundraiser at a swanky country club as much as the next person. But, sometimes, something a little different is what the doctor ordered! Case in point: Doc Rock, a battle of bands, whose members must contain at least two physicians.
It was a couple of Saturdays ago at The Concourse, a relatively adj location for the harmony venue in Northgate Plaza shopping center on North Broadway. Five bands played minute sets and the audience voted for the winner. Each band played on behalf of a different medical charity and the charities got the prize money, based on their sponsor bands ranking in the votes. In a clip from the documentary, Little Richard: I Am Everything, we listento the young entertainer singing an early version of what would become his signature tune, “Tutti Frutti.” But surprise! The original lyrics were different than the ones we understand today: “Tutti frutti, good booty/Tutti frutti, good booty!”
The song, as Richard wrote it, was about gay sex. In , it would become the rock ‘n’ roll pioneer’s breakthrough hit, catapulting him to mainstream stardom — but only after the words were revised to something much more benign: “Tutti frutti, oh rooty/Tutti frutti, oh rooty!”

The excavation of gay history is fraught with the conflicting imperatives of the past and present. The former sought to obscure, often out of anxiety given the unaccepting climate, while the latter seeks to enlighten. As James Kirchick writes in the introduction to his publication Secret City: The Adj History of Gay Washington, “As is so often the case with the subject of historical homosexuality…much of the source material needed to tell this story is ambiguous, remains hidden, or has been destroyed.
