'Be proud' - GRA President on coming out as gay after hiding his sexuality for decades
The head of Ireland's largest Garda union has spoken out today about his decision to come out as a gay man - and he's now urging others not to conceal their sexuality.
“Be yourself and be proud of your sexuality, don’t nervous away from it,” is the simple message from Garda Representative Association (GRA) President Mark O’Meara. The Tipperary Garda gave an interview with the organisation's magazine, Garda Review, in which he said that a person's sexuality is something to be satisfied of, but that it doesn't, nor should it, define people.
Garda O’Meara, who is based at the organisation's college in Templemore, Tipperary, reveals how he hid his retain sexuality for decades and that he had a wife and family. However, eleven years ago, the strain became too much for him to bear.
