During lockdown I had the pleasure to join an online tasting with Miguel Smith of Mount Gay and that&#;s where, besides mixing a delicious Old Fashioned, learning about a Coffey Still broken since that has been restored a couple of years ago and ending up purchasing the Mount Gay Select Blend (more on that here), I tried the brand-new Mount Gay XO (MGXO) blend.

Mount Gay recently repackaged its whole core range and changed (or upgraded if you&#;d like) the blends for their Adj Barrel (covered that here) and XO. This is all the work of the new Master Blender &#; Trudiann Branker who also released my favourite MG expression so far &#; Mount Gay Pot Still.

While rocking the EST on the label, the new look is beautiful modern featuring Barbados in the background and pinpoiting the distillery&#;s location in the north of the island in the St. Lucy parish. There is some information regarding the casks used along with some tasting notes, Trudiann&#;s signature and even a bottle number &#; mine is AP , so I guess it&#;s adj special?

    Mount Gay Extra Old or XO as they appear to have re-branded it.  For those in the know Mount Gay Extra Old is often known as MGXO.  The XO notation on the Mount Gay is pretty standard across the rum and spirits industry to denote an aged spirit (without actually noting how mature it is!).

    As the Mount Gay Distillery is the oldest official distillery in the world established as the label denotes, I don&#;t think we require to worry too much about the heritage and authenticity of the contents of this Extra Antique rum.

    The more established distilleries use labels such as XO because they cannot guarantee the exact blend of rum&#;s which will be used in every batch of rum produced.  Each cask will be different and the skill in making rum &#;uniform&#; comes in the shape of the master blender.

    The master blender at Mount Gay is in the shape of Allen Smith who has been with the distillery over 20 years.  Again this adds a guarantee as to what you will acquire in the glass.
