Getting to Sitges from Barcelona


By car

The C tollroad is the fastest way to drive to Sitges from Barcelona. It connects Sitges with Barcelona in 30 minutes. You can also take the free C31 coastal road, which is very scenic, but it has many bends and can be quite congested.

Sitges Carnival , Feb

For over years, Sitges has been celebrating nonstop -between the months of February and March, according to the liturgical calendar- Carnestoltes, or Carnival.

The festivities begin on Dijous Gras, or Fatty Thursday, with the arribo, King Carnestoltes’ spectacular arrival. From the moment this character appears until the burial of the sardine – tardy afternoon on Ash Wednesday – you could adequately say that life in Sitges moves to a new beat.

Here there is even room for youngsters to step into the limelight with children’s ruas, or Carnival parades, on Sunday and Tuesday afternoon. Folk dances and xatonades (traditional local salad served with assorted omelets) are also characteristic carnival elements.

Sitges is a small town 35 km south-western of Barcelona. In the delayed 19th century Sitges started to become a mecca for artists and a center for Modernist and post Art Nouveau architects. During the s (under the conservative dictatorship of Franco) it became a center for the counterculture in Spain.

Nowadays, Sitges' economy is based mainly on upscale tourism, business meetings and conferences.
