Sufjan stevens is gay

For two decades, curious queer fans of the enigmatic indie singer-songwriter (and Detroit-born and Michigan-raised) Sufjan Stevens have pored over his equally enigmatic lyrics for the reverse red herring that would finally insert the question to relax. Is he?He must be right?

Many of his songs reference emotionally intimate relationships and moments with men (and women, too). And then there are the probing articles that ponder what’s up with all the curiosity, like the bluntly titled Vice piece “We Can’t Stop Wondering if Sufjan Stevens Sings About God or Being Gay,” which explores the internet fascination with his sexual orientation.

At a tall level, the speculation is fraught with inappropriateness — it would absolutely not be OK to engage in this kind of intense investigation about the LGBTQ+ status of someone in your real life. And yet, there’s a unique earnestness here. The queer community who loves Sufjan simply wants to invite him into the fold, to make sure he knows how loved he is, whoever he is. Frankly, he’s so often singing

A couple weeks back, Sufjan Stevens quietly emerged with two new tracks, "Love Yourself" and "With My Whole Heart." The double-single arrived as a prelude to Pride Month, an affirmation punctuated by its rainbow-tinted cover art. Our boy Sufjan has never been expressly uncover about his sexuality outside of his lyrics (here's looking at you, "Predatory Wasp of the Palisades"), leading fans to often lovingly speculate whether his songs are gay or about God.

This morning, he doubled down on the intention of "Love Yourself" in an essay posted to his Tumblr, which reads enjoy his most open declaration yet. In the first two sentences of the blog, he quotes both RuPaul and Jesus Christ. "To love yourself, you must know yourself. And to know yourself, you must love yourself," he writes. Sufjan's theory is that "failure to love is a failure to be oneself, a failure to be human," and that the concept of self-loathing stems from when Adam and Eve initially gave into temptation. "It’s astounding how much of our w

Last week, beloved singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens released his 10th studio album, Javelin, to much critical fanfare. But Stevens’s Instagram post marking the album release got almost more attention than the music itself, as he seemingly confirmed his queerness publicly for the very first time.

“This album is dedicated to the light of my life, my beloved partner and best friend Evans Richardson, who passed away in April. He was an absolute gem of a person, full of life, love, laughter, curiosity, integrity and joy,” Stevens wrote, accompanying an image of Richardson.

Us Weeklywrote: “Sufjan Stevens comes out, dedicates album to tardy partner,” whereas Queerty wrote: “Sufjan Stevens comes out in emotional note about new album dedicated to his late partner.” PinkNews opted for “Sufjan Stevens comes out with moving album dedication to ‘beloved’ late partner.”

These headlines all say the same thing. But I think it’s worth asking: is this actually a coming
