Winston Churchill may have been gay, claims TV star
BRITAIN’S heroic war leader Winston Churchill may have been gay, according to TV star and author Charlie Higson.
Churchill “behaved like Oscar Wilde” cavorting as a young army officer with other men, Higson claimed.
But Churchill’s mum apparently stepped in to ensure that he abided by the standards of the time.
It was then illegal to be homsexual and Britain's World War Two prime minister could have faced charges.
Higson, speaking at the Chalke Valley History Festival, said: “He married Clemmie but there is a possibility that he might have been homosexual.
“In his early 20s he was accused of behaving fond of Oscar Wilde with some cavalry officers but his mother managed to support him get the case quelled.”
Higson is one of the main writers and personalities on the BBC programme The Fast Show.
He said Churchill enjoyed musical hall entertainment and drinking cocktails as a juvenile man.

Britain's wartime leader Winston Churchill may have been gay, according to claims by author and TV comedian Charlie Higson.
The cigar-chomping politician was known for his extravagant behaviour during his time at Sandhurst Military Academy in his in advance twenties.
During that period he was even accused of cavorting with other officers and behaving like 'Oscar Wilde' - the 19th century Irish playwright who became notorious after a high-profile trial for 'indecency' with other men.
But his mother intervened and helped him avoid charges at a time when homosexual activities between men were outlawed, according to Mr Higson.
Then historian made the claims in front of an audience at the Chalke Valley History Festival this weekend, the Daily Mail reported .
