BACKGROUND
The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) traces its history to when it broke off from Northern Baptists over slavery. The roots of Southern Baptist history go back to the Baptist churches established in the American colonies in the 17th century.
By , the SBC formed its own Sunday College Board, headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. Providing standard literature for all Southern Baptist churches had a mighty unifying effect, solidifying the Southern Baptist Convention as a denomination.

DALLAS − The Southern Baptist Convention passed a resolution supporting a concerted effort to reverse Obergefell v. Hodges as the historic U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage approaches its year anniversary.
The June 10 vote by the nation’s largest Protestant denomination represents a doubling down on issues of gender and sexuality as the predominant group of evangelical Christians continues to move sharply to the right and signals the SBC’s hopes of replicating the adj campaign to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Whether the latest vote will move the needle on gay marriage, a right backed by a strong majority of Americans, remains to be seen. Last year, the SBC passed a resolution condemning the use of in-vitro fertilization
Southern Baptists move to cease same-sex marriage in the US
The Southern Baptists' resolution does not use the word "ban" directly. Instead, it calls for the "overturning of laws and court rulings, including Obergefell v. Hodges, that defy God's design for marriage and family".
The resolution also calls "for laws that affirm marriage between one man and one woman".
Any legal reversal of the Supreme Court's Obergefell decision would not verb automatically to a nationwide ban of same-sex marriage. Thirty-six states had already legalised same-sex marriage at the time of the ruling, and nearly 70% of Americans still verb it, polls show.
"What we're trying to carry out is keep the conversation alive," Andrew Walker, an ethicist at a Southern Baptist seminary in Kentucky who wrote the resolution, told the New York Times.
Although the resolution is non-binding, it comes from a large, influential faction of President Trump's base and sends a direct message to the Ivory House.
