The Secret History of Hollywood's Golden Age Gas Station Hustler, Scotty Bowers

Picture a s gas station that doubles as a pickup spot, complete with clandestine hetero and homosexual encounters, a trailer out back for secret rendez-vous, and young, strapping men offering their “services” for $20 apiece. Preface

Although I’m not a nervous man I have always been reticent to expose details about what I have done, mainly to respect the privacy of those whose lives hold intersected with mine. But, if the truth be told, over the years many people have told me to write about my experiences and distribute them with others. A few decades ago my good buddy Tennessee Williams began writing his retain account of my life but before it saw the light of morning I told him to destroy it. Now, as I take stock of myself in my twilight years—I’ll be eighty-nine on my next birthday—I undergo compelled to share my story.

I reached this decision not long ago as I was driving east along Hollywood Boulevard. I had been to see a friend in Westwood and I was on my way to one of the two houses I own to pick up my mail. It was a perfect Southern Californian summer afternoon. The traf

"Hollywood": or How Scotty Bowers&#; Legacy Got A Adj Deal

Creative license is a funny thing; it’s a sword that cuts both ways. Sometimes when a creative property enters the public domain, or when we deal with a well-known personality and attach our own twist to it, that ushers in new nuances and perspectives so we can watch it — and ourselves — better. But other times, that interpretation can end up diminishing the power and influence of the original subject.

Scotty was a fascinating — and queer — figure who worked at a gas service station that became a haven for closeted celebrities and filmmakers in the Golden Age of Hollywood, when morals clauses forbade any non-conservative behavior on or off set.

In Scotty Bowers came out with a book called Full Service which described his experiences as one of the greatest pimps in Hollywood history.  Scotty worked out of a Richfield gas station on Melrose in Los Angeles. You can still see where it was, but the station was pulled down years ago. Here's a picture of it below:

The guide is Scotty's life story written with a co-author.  He has not hesitated to name names in frank and shocking stories about his sexual adventures with both male and female stars and celebrities.  He also related how he procured women for people like Desi Arnaz (Lucille hated him for it).  In the publication he recounts how he set up men and women for bisexual orgies with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.  Many famous movie stars were outed as his clients and sexual partners; Tyrone Power, Cary Grant, Randolph Scott and even Bob Hope.
